How the Digital SAT Score is Calculated

The Digital SAT features a 400 to 1600 total score calculated by summing two section scores: Reading and Writing (200–800) and Math (200–800).

Unlike the legacy paper exam, the Digital SAT is multistage adaptive. Each section begins with a routing module (Module 1). Depending on your accuracy on Module 1, the test delivers either an easier or harder Module 2.

How SAT Superscoring Gives You an Advantage

Because students often experience score fluctuations between sections across different sittings (e.g., scoring an 800 Math on a March exam but hitting peak Reading accuracy on a June exam), superscoring allows you to present your absolute best performance.

Our analysis of student testing histories shows an average superscore gain of 30 to 60 composite points simply by taking the exam twice and focusing targeted prep on the lower section for the retake.

Frequently Asked Questions About SAT Scores

How does the Digital SAT composite score get calculated?

Your total SAT score ranges from 400 to 1600 and is the direct sum of two section scores: Reading and Writing (200–800) and Math (200–800). Each section uses multistage adaptive testing where your performance on Module 1 routes you to either an easier or harder Module 2.

What is an SAT superscore and how do colleges treat it?

A superscore takes your highest Math section score and highest Reading & Writing section score across multiple official test dates and combines them into a new, higher composite score. Over 80% of top colleges and universities superscore the SAT.

How many questions can you miss to get a 1500+ on the Digital SAT?

Because the Digital SAT uses item response theory (IRT) equating, there is no fixed raw-score conversion. Typically, you can miss approximately 2 to 4 questions across the entire exam and still score 1500+, provided you were routed to the harder Module 2 in both sections.

What is a good SAT score for top universities?

For Ivy League and top-20 colleges (such as MIT, Stanford, and Harvard), the middle 50% SAT range is typically 1500 to 1570. For competitive state flagships (such as UVA, Michigan, or UNC), scores between 1380 and 1500 are highly competitive.
