How the 2-stage adaptive engine works
The Digital SAT uses multistage adaptive testing (MST). Rather than adapting after each individual question, the test adapts between modules:
- Module 1 (Routing): You begin with a standard mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Your accuracy on this module determines which version of Module 2 you unlock.
- Module 2 (Upper or Lower Track): If you answer enough questions correctly in Module 1, you route to the Upper Track, which unlocks scores up to 800 for that section. If you make too many errors, you route to the Lower Track, which caps your maximum section score (typically around 580–600).
Strategic takeaway: Accuracy on Module 1 is critical. Careless mistakes in the opening 20 minutes can artificially depress your score ceiling before you ever reach the second half of the test.

1. Reading and Writing Section (54 Questions · 64 Minutes)
Passages are short (25 to 150 words) with exactly one question per passage. You have approximately 71 seconds per question. Questions are categorized into four content domains:

2. Math Section (44 Questions · 70 Minutes)
Calculators are permitted on the entire section. Approximately 75% of questions are multiple-choice, and 25% are student-produced responses (grid-in). You have approximately 95 seconds per question:
