Preparation runway recommendations
8 to 12-Week Runway
3 to 4 hours per week: Ideal for building deep conceptual mastery across all 8 domains. Complete an initial diagnostic, work through weak subskills, and take 3 to 4 full official practice tests on Bluebook to build stamina.
4 to 6-Week Push
5 to 6 hours per week: Best for students who already took an initial test and want to target 2 to 3 specific point-leaks (e.g. Desmos efficiency, Transitions, or Quadratic modeling) before an upcoming retake.
2-Week Emergency Plan
60 minutes daily: Avoid trying to learn entire new math curricula. Focus strictly on eliminating careless mistakes on Standard English conventions, practicing high-frequency Desmos keystrokes, and resting the day before.
What to bring on test day
- Fully charged testing device: Your laptop or tablet with the College Board Bluebook™ app pre-installed and updated.
- Power cord & adapter: Testing centers are not guaranteed to have open outlets at every desk.
- Valid photo ID & printed admission ticket: Driver's license, passport, or official school ID.
- Approved backup calculator: Even though Desmos is built-in, bringing an approved handheld graphing calculator provides a comforting backup.
- Pencils & scratch paper: The testing center provides 3 sheets of scratch paper; you supply your own standard #2 pencils.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register after the regular deadline passes?
Yes. The College Board allows late registration until approximately 11 to 14 days prior to the test date, but charges an additional late registration fee ($34 USD).
How many times should a student take the SAT?
Most students achieve their highest score on their second or third attempt. Almost all colleges superscore the SAT (combining your highest Math score with your highest Reading & Writing score from different test dates).
What if I need to cancel or change my test date?
You can change your test date through your College Board student account for a change fee, or cancel for a partial refund prior to the cancellation deadline.
